General Career Experience:
Originally from South Florida, and a graduate of University of Central Florida and Indiana University School of Law, Sandy is a registered patent attorney who began her practice over 10 years ago in Atlanta, Georgia, after a decade-long career as a DNA Forensic Scientist. Pursuing her dream to return to her Native Florida, she became a member of the Florida Bar in 2007, spearheading the opening of a Florida branch office and acting as its Managing Partner before forming her own firm, now Innovative IP, PLC, in the Summer of 2009.
Patent Subject Matter Experience:
With experience representing clients ranging from individual first-time inventors to international and multi-national corporations, she has developed and maintained diverse worldwide intellectual property portfolios, and easily adapts her skills to a diverse selection of arts, having prosecuted patents in injection molding, audio technology, specialty vehicles, vehicle accessories, earth moving, landscaping, and heavy equipment, tools and devices, specialized engines, power systems and sensory systems, machine tools and hardware, sporting and recreational equipment including exercise systems, cookware, housewares and home improvement goods, pet care products, games, novelty goods, functional apparel, jewelry and accessories, cosmetic containers, medical devices including orthopedic braces, acupressure tools, pacing leads, laproscopic tools, and sleep apnea treatment devices, food products, immuno-genetic marker systems, and business methods in the field of accounting, advertising, healthcare, payment processing, data acquisition and management, and marketing.
Scope of Patent Experience:
Her patent practice also includes preparation of patentability, infringement, and clearance opinions, reissue prosecution, and a particular focus on Patent Cooperation Treaty matters, having assisted clients in pursuing patent protection in Europe, China, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Russia, Africa, and other geographic regions throughout the World, as well as offering U.S. representation to Foreign Associates serving clients in Germany, Italy, South America, United Kingdom, and Ireland.
Trademark Experience:
In addition to patents, Sandy also has signficant experience with trademarks, including prosecution, preparation of registrability opinions, trademark watching and enforcement, and TTAB proceedings, representing clients whose recognizable international trademark and trade dress portfolios identify childcare and baby products, cosmetics, clothing and accessory lines, medical devices, restaurants, food products, professional services, magazines, collectibles, and a variety of other goods and services.
Additional Intellectual Property Experience:
With experience in transactional matters including licensing, non-circumvent, and manufacturing agreements, in copyright protection and enforcement, and in litigation, particularly motion practice, Sandy offers her clients well-rounded, yet specialized representation in all aspects of intellectual property. She enjoys the diverse subject matter of her practice, and listening to and helping clients to identify and prioritize intellectual property strategies in view of their business plans and economic forecasts.
Personal Interests and Values:
She also enjoys life balance, and finds great enjoyment in activities with family and friends, boating, beach running, biking, skiing, traveling, cooking, photography, and collecting sea glass and antique law books and patents. She takes pride in supporting local entrepreneur and start-up organizations as a volunteer, and in encouraging children to pursue educational excellence by speaking to school groups about science-based careers. She also enjoys giving back to the community, having served as a volunteer for Insight For The Blind and Meals On Wheels, and having regularly cooked and served meals for local shelter residents in Georgia, as well as serving locally in Florida. She continues to seek opportunities to learn about how to best support the continuing economic development of Florida, by participating in and attending strategic planning events, such as Bioflorida, Farm to Fuel Summit, Invention to Venture, Florida Medical Manufacturers Consortium, AeA Technology Summit, Central Florida Business Expo, and others.
Personal Goals for Innovative IP, PLC:
Sandra Sovinski founded Innovative IP, PLC with the initial goals of (1) further strengthening client relationships by encouraging open communication, (2) streamlining efficiency of operation to eliminate unnecessary overhead and expense and thereby allow for a more economical delivery of legal services, and (3) rendering the practice of law more "green" by incorporating readily available technologies for an essentially paperless firm. She developed these goals in response to client input over the last ten years, in recognition of the current economic climate and its impact on client business strategies and decision making, and in respect of our fragile environment and the need for active change to address traditional, yet frequently wasteful, business practices, and she looks forward to the future, with faith.
